Weimar
When you think of
"Thuringia" and "culture", the first names that spring to mind
are of course Bach and Goethe, Schiller and Wieland – or
perhaps the Wartburg and Weimar.
But Thuringia has
much, much more to offer. Every square kilometre is brimming
with history. There is simply an endless list of monuments and
museums to visit.
Where to start? A
visit to Castle Friedenstein in Gotha or
Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt comes highly
recommended.
Did you know that Heinrich Schütz, the
pre-eminent German composer of the 17th century, was born on 14
October 1585 in Köstritz (near Gera), or that the inventor of
the kindergarten, Friedrich Fröbel, was born on 21
April 1782 in Oberweissbach?
That the famed encyclopaedist of
the animal kingdom, Alfred Brehm, was born on 2
February 1829 in Renthendorf near Jena and writer Theodor
Storm was county judge from 1856-1864 in Heiligenstadt?
