Festivals and
Events in the Black Forest 2004
From July to August, Calw will hold a number of events associated
with its most famous son, Hermann Hesse, author and winner of the
Nobel Prize for Literature. "Hermann Hesse and Music" is the theme for
a whole range of interesting talks, readings and concerts in the town.
On 9 and 10 July, there is also the
12th Hermann Hesse Colloquium. This year's event deals with the
origins of "Steppenwolf" and its reception.
This year, the "kleine bühne schönau"
theatre in Schönau in the Belchenland region is staging the play "Das
Wirtshaus im Spessart" (The Spessart Inn).
For performances on 16, 17, 18, 23
and 25 July and from 30 July to 1 August 2004, a special inclusive
package is available. This includes three nights with half board and a
6-course dinner in a 3-star hotel with an indoor pool. Prices start
from €225.00
Pforzheim holds its popular
Gruschtelmarkt flea market on Friday, 9 July in the evening and during
the day on Saturday, 10 July. The 19th Pforzheim "Oechsle" Festival
starts Wednesday, 25 August 2004, and runs for 12 days.
On 3-6 November 2004, Pforzheim hosts
the "Golden Autumn 2004" festival at which around 50 international
goldsmiths, jewellery designers and jewellery manufacturers will
exhibit their latest work. In addition, art galleries will organise a
number of special programmes during the event and there are also
readings, concerts and activities for children and young people.
Schönwald is celebrating its fifth
"French Evening" on Saturday, 26 June 2004, at which 24 clubs and
groups, along with local restaurants, present a range of culinary
specialities from neighbouring France including wine, cheese, fish and
Flammkuchen (onion tart) on the 'festival mile'. Glen Miller's
unforgettable melodies will be ringing out in Schönwald's
Uhrmacher-Ketterer hall on Tuesday, 17 August 2004.
Seebach, a village on the shores of
Lake Mummelsee, has a wide variety of programmes on offer in 2004.
For
example, you'll be able to enjoy a lively traditional rustic evening
at Vollmers Mill, don your protective helmet and Wellington boots for
a tour of the ore mines, watch the magician Emmello entertain the
little ones before they head off to Orlemann's bakery to bake bread
rolls, or take a stroll through the woods with the forest ranger and
sample some freshly-baked bacon flan after an evening tour. Affordable
self-catering apartments or even basic accommodation in a 'hay hotel',
Seebach offers plenty of choice.
The series of festivals around Mount
Kaiserstuhl-Tuniberg begins with the Ihringen wine festival on 11-14
June 2004. Breisach celebrates its local wine festival on 27-30 August
and each of the seven wine-growing villages in Vogtsburg has at least
one wine festival to offer, e.g. Schelingen wine festival on 20-22
August or the Burkheim wine festival on 3-6 September.
In addition to these festivals, there
will also be a number of get-togethers and open-days at local
wineries. The focus is very much on cheese at the "Käse-Feschd"
(cheese festival) in Endingen on 14 and 15 August, while Eichstetten
holds a vegetable festival on 5 September.
Cultural events include the
Potters' Market in Breisach on 12-13 June, the Vogtsburg arts and
crafts fair on 26-27 June, the 'Lyrical Summer' festival on Mount
Kaiserstuhl from 17 July to 22 August, and Breisach festival with
open-air theatre performances from 12 June to 12 September 2004.
There
is also sport around Mount Kaiserstuhl with the Rothaus Regio-Tour
International cycle race on 4-8 August, the thrilling final leg of
which runs through the Kaiserstuhl vineyards.
A range of affordable accommodation
is on offer during various events in Kappelrodeck, a village famous
for its red wine. With prices from €14.00 per person for a private
room, from €22.00 for a room at an inn and from €25.00 for a holiday
apartment, this really is a great way to enjoy the "Black Forest
Festival" (15-18 July), during which Kappelrodeck's hotels and
restaurants tempt visitors with a range of culinary delights.
You
could also pay a visit to the traditional "Bock Beer" festival on 7-9
August or the summer festival organised by the Trachtenkapelle, a band
in traditional costume, on 20-23 August. To round off events in
Kappelrodeck, the "Wine and Village Festival" is held on 28-29 August.
Baiersbronn presents a "wine festival
of the senses" on 10-11 July as part of the 5th Baiersbronn wine
festival at the Schwarzwaldhalle, during which wineries and wine
cooperatives present their fine vintages. Visitors will also be able
to sample culinary delicacies and visit a number of interesting
presentations. On 31 July 2004, the Tonbach valley in Baiersbronn will
be turned into a "sea of light" by 35,000 lanterns.
Ottenhöfen, the award-winning
family-friendly holiday resort, has put together an interesting
package for families: seven nights in a holiday apartment including a
visit to Europa-Park Rust for the whole family, as well as a Black
Forest Card with access to more than 100 free attractions in the
region, a welcome meeting and a "surprise gift" for children, free
organised children's activities, tour of the mills, and two free
admissions to the outdoor pool in Ottenhöfen.
The package also
includes free hire of pushchairs and tennis rackets, and two free
admissions to the miniature golf course. Prices start from €429.00.
On Sunday, 6 June 2004, it is time
for "SlowUp Hochrhein", which starts in Bad Säckingen. "SlowUp" is a
fun-packed day out where a cross-border circuit is created on the
Upper Rhine between Laufenburg and Bad Säckingen for cyclists,
bikers and inline skaters. The roads are closed to traffic for the
event and visitors can also enjoy plenty of gourmet food and
entertainment in Bad Säckingen.
More sporting activities are on offer
in St. Blasien-Menzenschwand, where you can book a Nordic walking
starter package from 27 September to 22 October. For €25.00, you get a
two-day Nordic walking seminar with a qualified trainer, with a total
of 5-6 hours of instruction and hands-on experience, a waist bag and
walking pole hire for the week. An extensive range of accommodation is
also on offer.
Once again, Freudenstadt is offering
some interesting event highlights in 2004. These include the
International Chess Festival on 2-10 May, the Culinary Spring Festival
on 20 May, the market criers' festival (Hamburg Fish Market) on the
historical market square on 10-13 June, the town festival with large
firework display on 3-4 July, the Lukull culinary festival and jazz
brunch in the spa gardens on 31 July and 1 August, and Freudenstadt
Potters' Market on 7-8 August.
In St. Peter the solstice bonfire
celebrations take place as the sun goes down on 19 June. The 6th Black
Forest Cultural Festival kicks off on 17 July at the spa and festival
hall in St. Peter and there is a horse show on 24-25 July. On 1
August, an arts and crafts fair will be held in St. Peter's abbey
courtyard and the 2004 St. Peter music festival takes place from 30
September to 3 October.
It is so
easy to find a reason to celebrate a great party: maybe a new wine ?
Let's celebrate! Christmas coming up soon ? Let's toast it with hot
spiced wine! A good harvest ? We cetainly are grateful for so many
blessings and celebrate. Let's do it with a great big "Volksfest."
Well, enjoy yourselves !
